Grupo Modelo, founded in 1925, is the leader in Mexico in beer production, distribution and marketing, with 63.0% of the total (domestic and export) market share, as of December 31, 2008. It has seven brewing plants in Mexico, with a total annual installed capacity of 60 million hectoliters. Its export brands include Corona, Modelo, and Pacífico.
Grupo Modelo also brews brands intended solely for the domestic Mexican market, Estrella (a local beer found only in western Mexico); and León and Montejo (originally local to Yucatán but now available nationwide). It is the importer of Anheuser-Busch InBev’s products in Mexico, including Budweiser, Bud Light and O’Doul’s. It also imports the Chinese Tsingtao brand and the Danish beer Carlsberg. Through a partnership with Nestlé Waters, it produces and distributes in Mexico the bottled water brands Sta. María and Nestlé Pureza Vital, among others.
The Compañía Cervecera de Puerto Rico (formerly known as Cervecería India) is the largest beer brewery and manufacturer of canned and bottled soft drinks in Puerto Rico. The company’s main product is Medalla Light, a 4.5% abv pale lager. The brewery also produces Malta India, a non-alcoholic soft drink made from barley. In May 2010 the brewery announced the launch of their new beer; Silver Key Light, it hit the market on June 1, 2010. On August 1, 2011 Magna, a premium beer, was lauched.
Cervecera de Puerto Rico has been the winner of several awards, including:
- Gold Medal and Best-in-class beer in category International Golden Lagers Beer in New Zealand Awards 2007
- Quality Medal for the third consecutive year competition Monde Selection 2007. Monde Selection is organization recognized worldwide as the most seniority and representation in the field of selection quality.
- Medal of quality Australian International Beer Awards 2007, the second largest beer competition in the world.
Cervecería Cuauhtémoc-Moctezuma is a major brewery based in Monterrey, México, founded in 1890. Currently it is a subsidiary of Heineken International. The company operates plants in Monterrey, Tecate, Navojoa, Guadalajara, Toluca, Orizaba and Chihuahua. As of 2013, the company is estimated to have an annual production of 30 million hectoliters. Brands include XXX, Superior, Sol, Noche Buena, Carta Blanca, Tecate, Bohemia and Indio.
The Redhook Ale Brewery, headquartered in Seattle, Washington, is a beer brewery with operations in Woodinville, Washington (47°44′0.78″N 122°8′54.24″W) and Portsmouth, New Hampshire. Redhook currently produces several styles of beer, marketed under distinct brand names. Redhook’s flagship brand is Redhook ESB (5.8% ABV). Redhook also brews Long Hammer IPA (6.2% ABV), Pilsner (5.3% ABV), Copper Hook (5.8% ABV), and its seasonal beer offerings.
Backus and Johnston is the largest brewery in Peru, part of Grupo Empresarial Bavaria, which itself is part of the international SABMiller group. Its main brewery is located in the Ate District of Lima. Brands include: San Juan (a 5% abv pale lager), Arequipeña, Cusqueña, Cristal, Pilsen Callao (a 5% abv pale lager), Pilsen Trujillo, and Barena.
Sapporo Breweries Limited is a Japanese brewery founded in 1876. It is the oldest brand of beer in Japan. It was first brewed in Sapporo, Japan in 1876. The company has five breweries in Japan, the Sleeman brewery in Canada, and Sapporo Brewing Company in La Crosse, Wisconsin, U.S. The main brands are Sapporo Draft (Premium in North America); Yebisu; and Sleeman Cream Ale. Sapporo Premium has been the #1 selling Asian beer in the United States since Sapporo U.S.A., Inc. was first founded in 1984.
